CON-POETARE: in duetto con il Maestro

 “Imitiamo per amore” (Adam Walker)

English version:Co-poetizing

CO-POETIZING: In Duet with the Master

“We imitate out of love” (Adam Walker)

Versione italiana: Con-Poetare

One of the exercises in “The Way of Poetry” is to attune yourself to a poem you like and write your own in dialogue with it. Co-Poetizing can take place on various levels: it can be an exercise in imitation and learning; it can be an emotional response—that is, attuning oneself to the mood of the chosen poem; it can be a continuation of that poem; or it can be a variation on a theme.

The key is to establish some kind of connection between the poem that moved us and the one we’ll create in response. We can connect stylistically, emotionally, intellectually, or spiritually to the author or the poem that inspires us.

Below, I’ve included one of my co-poetry exercises based on the famous poem by William Carlos Williams, which I’ve reproduced here after my text.
