From the Treccani dictionary, 'nostalgia' means: 'an acute desire to return to a place that has been one's habitual residence and is now far away'. If, on the other hand, we search for 'regret', we find: "nostalgic and sorrowful memory of lost persons or things, or of missed opportunities".
So regret and nostalgia, although they are states of mind with many similarities, differ in one essential element: a fully lived experience. Nostalgia in fact turns with gentle melancholy towards something that has actually been there: a feeling, a relationship, a place, a person, and that we perhaps fear never to find again.
Regret, on the contrary, has within it the bitterness of emptiness: we feel that we have missed an appointment with life, that we have not grasped an opportunity at once, that we have not recognised a great love or an opportunity for growth, that we have been deprived of some experience that is vital to us.
In my life, I have always felt a longing for another world, another atmosphere, another dimension. However, as I grow older, I notice that this earthly experience, especially in recent years, is becoming riddled with regrets. Certain things will never return, certain lightnesses, certain loves, certain leaps of the heart.
Although a certain fire still shines and burns in me, the experiences and relationships that come my way are highly partial and compromised. Result? Needless to say, I sing them in music and poetry... after all, we are on planet Earth, maybe on the next one I'll do better!
