RICHIAMO

English version at the link: The Call

RICHIAMO

…e cullo la mia croce

in ginocchio, sul molo

risacca

di luce.

Cantano le Sirene,

nenie di un lontano Fuoco:

Hic sunt leones

ma io esondo - e mi brucio

Hic sunt leones

nostalgia

d’Infinito

THE CALL

“…interior intimo meo et superior summo meo - …more intimate than my innermost self and higher than my highest self” (Saint Augustine, Confessions)

Versione italiana al link: Richiamo

I have always had the feeling of coming from another planet, from a more rarefied, luminous and subtle reality than the one where I seem to be now. In my own way, I embody and manifest this iridescent, if you like, 'spiritual' dimension in everyday life, which is so practical, material and sometimes coarse. So, sometimes, in the silence of my soul, I feel an inevitable and burning nostalgia for home: it is like the echo of distant fires, of the stardust that is our absolute origin. Often I feel like crying; however, when I embrace this pain, this eternal longing, it gently melts into song, dissolves into poetry. Then I look into the eyes of those I love and, for a moment, I am home again.  I plunge into the heart of my Heart and again I feel the warmth of my essence, the pulsating beat of the Infinite

THE CALL

...and I cradle my cross

on my knees, on the dock

light

backwash.

Sirens sing,

lullabies of a distant Fire:

Hic sunt leones

But I flood - and I burn

Hic sunt leones

Yearning

of the Soul

THE COUPLE COULD BE EVEN JOY

Quintessence of Tantra: "The sacred couple is two people who are really good together.” (Giorgia Sitta).

For years now I have been performing horrible experiments on myself and on the poor souls who unluckily venture with me into a relationship; for years I have been reflecting on the successful or unsuccessful experiences of relatives, friends and counselling clients. All this mental, emotional and spiritual torment is leading me to the shocking and always debatable conclusion that we should be happy as a couple.

The relationship attracts us, and it is one of the most instructive testing grounds for the human being... however, if the relationship diminishes the quality of our life, is it worth it? When a person has learnt to feel really good alone, the temptation to stay that way is very strong. Fortunately, not many beings have gone that far, otherwise the human race would have been extinct long ago and, considering everything, I don't know if it would have been much better for planet Earth

I really think that, as a couple, we should enjoy ourselves on all levels, from the sexual to the spiritual, without aspiring to perfection but also without having to be 'satisfied'. When I 'settle', I unconsciously declare that I do not deserve the best in life, which is actually the birthright of every living being. Existence is complex and painful enough on its own, let alone adding the odd guilt trip whereby we don't consider ourselves worthy of being happy and have to make do with a second-rate relationship.

Some of my partners have been real teachers for me: they have rarely burdened me with their old stories, their childhood traumas or their unresolved past. They have taught me how much healthier it is to deal with our own wounds, perhaps with appropriate support, and then to put the knowledge gained into practice in the present relationship.

So, if we realise that we have wrong attitudes or our partner points them out to us, we can take note and begin to concretely and courageously apply the opposite behaviour. Of course, at first it will seem like moving a mountain. Let's imagine a person who is not used to talking about his or her feelings and who, because of this communication defect, has ruined potentially beautiful relationships: for him or her, even just being able to say 'I love you, I missed you today, I want to be with you' could be a titanic task. Or let's take an aggressive person, predisposed to attack and arrogance: it will be already a lot if, three times out of ten, he/she bites his/her tongue and apologizes.

Apart from these adjustments, which are highly evolutionary for both partners, the couple should still be joy and laughter, hugs and kisses, shared experiences and difficulties overcome together. It can become an excellent playground for learning to take the first step in demonstrating love, for training oneself to discover something new and beautiful in one's partner and to communicate it to him or her; we can learn never to take anything for granted and exercise, instead, the virtue of attention, which is the fundamental nourishment for making everything we love grow.

English version at the link: The couple could even be joy

TIME IS LOVE

“I'm losing you, I know your heart is miles away

There's a whisper there where once there was a storm

And all that's left is that image that I've filed away

And some memories have tattered as they're torn”(Jagger-Richards)

Versione italiana al link : Il tempo è amore

A few weeks ago, with my closest friends, we were wondering what characterises a healthy and valuable romantic relationship. Obviously, each of us has a different perception, just as each of us has a different way of interpreting and living time.

At the end of the day, however, a good relationship is one in which time is spent well together. Here again, time is a determining factor: it reveals deceptions and self-deceptions, compatibilities and differences.  For example, if your partner assures you that he or she wants to live together but never shows up with a suitcase in hand or does not invite you to move in with him or her, something is not right. Or if he tells you that he misses you and then not only does he not move, but he does not even talk about seeing you again: either because of the lockdown, or because he has a lot to do... perhaps because he does not want you enough.

What I am referring to at this point is the 'basic' development and projectual time of a couple, I am not even talking about soul mates, mental sharing or filling emotional needs. First of all because, at least as far as I am concerned, having reached this venerable age and having worked a little on my character, I already have various friends who love me and with whom I can spend hours discussing everything from my metaphysical yearnings to pistachio puddings. Are they all potential partners? Obviously not. Secondly, because as an abundantly adult person, and thank God not vaccinated, it would also be the case to resolve on my own my affective needs and my existential crises without projecting them on the partner who, poor guy, will probably have his own.

When I speak of an average decent relationship, I am referring instead to desiring and feeling desired, to being well and joyfully together. I am talking about the willingness and ability to carve out quality time, to share experiences, even the simplest and most everyday ones, such as eating or sleeping together, kissing in front of a sunset, laughing on a movie cuddled up on the sofa, or showing each other the places and faces of our lives.  Of course, the current moment does not exactly seem to be conducive to encounters, contact and a full life, and yet that is precisely why we need it most. Believing to have or cultivate a relationship via chat or telephone is the illusion that defends us from confrontation with true love; it can hide the fear of our own feelings and emotions. Or, more simply, it is just laziness due to lack of interest in the assumed partner.

"Nothing is trivial", said Brandon Lee in the film 'The Crow'. Never take people for granted, childishly deluding ourselves that they will always be there for us. As the Magnificent said, 'Let him who wishes to be happy, be happy: there is no certainty of tomorrow'. Especially now.

English version at the link: Time is love

Nothing is trivial”, affermava Brandon Lee nel film ‘"Il Corvo. Soprattutto adesso.

THE COUPLE IS NOT PSYCHOTHERAPY (for free)

"Let me peacefully enjoy the joys of divorce."

We women, but also some men with a very pronounced feminine side, secretly consider the romantic relationship as a kind of free psychotherapy. We may not be totally aware of it, but deep in our hearts we hope that the relationship will save us, that that 'he' will not touch and at the same time heal all our emotional wounds: abandonment, rejection, betrayal, lack of Kinder snacks, sadistic rationing of Nutella.

While it is true that a couple can represent a path of growth and even a 'corrective emotional experience', in the sense that it has to be corrected by dint of grappas and spirits, it is very bold to think that the unfortunate partner, rarely an enlightened one, can really take charge of resolving our inner dramas, which extend from childhood, or rather, from prehistory to the present day.

He will already be quite heroic if he silently and stoically endures our endless tales of ex-bastards, anaffective mothers, absent fathers, avoiding dogs and rejecting turtles. And yet we continue to pursue the myth of emotional sharing, when in my opinion it would already be quite an achievement to share a plate of spaghetti in happiness, make love with satisfaction and plan a nice weekend.

After all, we do not usually appreciate, or rather, we take for granted, what we already have, investing our energies in trying to manipulate and reshape the other: it is like asking a dog to meow, no wonder if in the end we feel frustrated, resentful and empty. In our therapeutic persistence, which would even be noble if applied to ourselves and with the help of a professional, we do not give up on our partner, whom we have already widely defined as dysfunctional, because:

1) we have to evolve through this and learn something (What? Mystery of faith)

2) he has to evolve (the way we like it) and learn something (see above).

Such mechanisms have now become practically DNA; they are very difficult to identify and not to 'justify', given the rhetoric and sentimentality with which couple life is generally imagined and defined in our sad and superficial society. In short, we are all waiting for our soul mate when it is more difficult to find a good plumber or to cancel a telephone contract without paying too many charges.

LA COPPIA NON È PSICOTERAPIA (a gratis)

“Lasciatemi godere in pace le gioie del divorzio.”

English version at the link: The couple is not psychotherapy

2) lui deve evolvere (come piace a noi) e imparare qualcosa (vedi sopra)

TIME IS MONEY

“Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head

And as I climb into an empty bed

Oh well. Enough said.”(The Smiths)

"He who cannot manage time will be managed by it.

Versione italiana al link: Il tempo è denaro

Just yesterday afternoon I was helping one of my students to do a research in English which consisted of tracking down all the proverbial and idiomatic expressions related to the word and concept of 'time'. More or less all of us are familiar with sayings such as 'a waste of time' or 'time is money'. Nevertheless, I paused again to reflect on the preciousness of this element, especially in a historical moment like the one we are living - or rather, undergoing.

Our time, especially in Italy, is paralyzed and lacking in planning; the unhealthy and sadistic game of colours or dcpm would not even allow us to plan the weekend, not to mention other more far-reaching initiatives. And yet, this very time crystallised in a deadly, boring and stagnant present has made me realise how important it is to fill our lives with vital experiences and meaningful people.

Though before I used to give more space and time to 'dry branches', i.e. to 'lukewarm' or even not very nourishing activities and relationships, now I feel more strongly the need to live with presence, awareness and intensity all that is still possible to experience. I would even add "even everything that would not be 'possible' or 'allowed' to be experienced" - because restrictions exist in our heads even before they do in reality. This means that if I stall a project or a relationship because of the lockdown, I probably don't care about that project or that person anymore and have found a socially approved excuse to stay in my comfort zone.

Beh’, ho detto abbastanza.”(The Smiths)

English version at the link: TIME IS MONEY

HE WAS HOT: lui era caldo

There are loves that begin and die in a glance, others that last one night, others that light up an entire life.” (Gabriele Policardo)

- This is one of my favorite Rolling Stones songs and one that we also happily sang in my first all-girls band, The Windows. This time I have made my own rendition, slightly changing the original lyrics to suit my experience.

Era veloce - sapeva come muoversi

Era caldo - mentre mi strappava i vestiti

Niente come i bei vecchi tempi

E lui era forte - era forte e vero

Era biondo - e i suoi occhi erano blu

The video of the song at the link : He Was Hot

My lyrics:

Florence was cold and damp

TV is just a blank

Looks like another dead end Sunday

Who wants to brave the pouring rain

For a glass of French champagne?

Well grab a car, grab a car and baby, come right by

And he was hot, as he kissed my mouth

He was hot - as I wiped his brow

He was hot - he pinned me to the ground

He was quick - he knew his way around

He was hot - as he tore my clothes

He was hot - he had no place to go

He was hot - on a cold and rainy night

Florence was smoky grey

Nothing like the good old days

Well I got a fever that I'm fighting

I don't need your company

Leave me in my misery

I can take the rebound just like lightning

And he was hot - and I had the blues

honey, where were you?

If you were in my shoes

You would be excused

You could never wait, never hesitate

on a cold and rainy night

I think I'm going off the rails

Riding down the pleasure trails

I was taking passion where you find it

And he was strong - he was strong and true

He was blond, - and his eyes were blue

I was lost - and he took a chance

At just a brief romance

Down the avenue, into the lost bayou

Into the tall bamboo, back to the human zoo

I wish you all the best, I hope we meet again

On a cold Firenze night

He  was hot

He was hot

He was hot hot hot

“BEYOND”: A Good Friday poem

 “Ero mors tua, o mors - I will be thy death, o Death”(Osea 13,14)

Versione italiana al link: Oltre

To introduce this poem, I will use some passages from the book 'The Dark Night of the Soul' by John of the Cross, a saint, mystic and doctor of the Church, who lived during the 1500s in Spain.

"The Dark Night of the Soul" is really one of the most intense and difficult states of spiritual transformation, where suffering is crucial and at the same time all internal, not easy to communicate or share. According to Roberto Assagioli, founder of Psychosynthesis, "a similar stage and experience, at least for some references, but considered under a voluntary and active aspect, are described in the hermetic, initiatic and alchemical traditions as 'trial by fire' and as 'washing in the waters'. It is therefore the extreme, perhaps definitive, process of initiatory death.

John of the Cross writes: "...such are the effects produced in the soul by this night that hides the hope of seeing the light of day again. In this regard, the prophet Job says: 'At night I feel my bones piercing, and the pains that gnaw at me do not give me rest' (Job 30:17)... This struggle and this fight are tremendous, because the peace that one expects must be very deep; the spiritual pain is also intimate and subtle, because the love that one must achieve must also be very high and pure.

Below is my poem "Beyond", written, not surprisingly, today 2 April 2021, on Good Friday.

BEYOND

Captured

in your pearly spider's web

I’m hanging on the cross

pierced by the dawn.

You killed me.

But I am beyond,

yes, well beyond

your deadly sting
